The Penguin Who Wanted to Fly

Today we read the story "The Penguin Who Wanted to Fly" by Ben Brown and Helen Taylor, as well as "The Mountain That Loved A Bird" by Alice McLerran and Eric Carle.

We wrote in our personal journals about our favourite part of "The Penguin Who Wanted to Fly," and about what we did over the weekend.

At centers, we opened two new centers: the camping center and the bird nest building center. At the camping center, we read books about outdoor adventures in the tent and in the cave, roasted imaginary marshmallows, and planned picnics. At the bird next building center, we used paper, feather, rocks, pinecones, and branches to make homes for our birds!

The afternoon students attended an assembly about Readathon. This will be the third annual Readathon at Eric Harvie School, and each day, students will have the chance to participate in a fun activity that celebrates and encourages a love of reading. The activities are as follows:

  • Tuesday - Drop Everything and Read Day
  • Wednesday - Student Read-Aloud Day with Grade 3/4 Buddies
  • Thursday - Dress-Up as Your Favourite Book Character Day
  • Friday - Oral story telling
Readathon information pamphlets went home today. Please go through this form with your child so that they understand that Readathon can take place at school AND at home. Please encourage your child to read every day! If you would like your child to participate in Thursday's Dress-Up as Your Favourite Book Character Day, please return their form and payment no later than Wednesday, March 6. The cost for pictures is $6.00, and all money raised will go towards new books for Eric Harvie School.

As a part of our Kindergarten Science curriculum, we have been investigating birds! We are looking for students to begin bringing in any newspaper or matte (non-shiny) advertisements for a paper maîché egg project.

Friday, March 8 is AM Kindergarten's field trip to the Bird Sanctuary. Please sign up to volunteer if you have your volunteer clearance ASAP. Thank you!
